Effective Weight Loss Diets: Five Things They All Have In Common
There are as many ways to effectively diet as there are individuals. Food is so intrinsic to our lifestyle, that no two dieters lose weight in the exact same way, even if they’re following similar plans. But that doesn’t mean that effective weight loss diets don’t have some commonalities, either. Whether you subscribe to a vegan weight loss diet or a paleo one, a low carb diet or a raw food diet, you’ll find that your weight loss diet (if it’s effective) probably has the following five things in common.
- They encourage veggie intake.
There’s hardly a diet in the world that works that frowns on fresh veggies, and there’s good reason for that. Vegetables naturally help control calorie intake in several ways and they’re important sources of many of the vitamins, minerals, and nutrients we need to live. Most vegetables aren’t calorie dense, meaning you get a relatively large portion for the amount of calories you’re consuming. They’re also typically high in fiber, which helps keep you full and can help keep your blood sugar balanced. They’re an all around win.
- They steer clear of added sugars.
The truth is, naturally occurring sugars are usually all the sugar we really need in our diets. Added sugar—like the sugars in candy, soda, and pastries—is just there to cater to our sweet tooth. It also eats up your calorie budget, and can lead to feeling hungry even if you’re actually gaining weight. Beware, too, the “hidden” added sugars in breads, condiments, and sauces.
- They discourage refined grains.
White bread and pasta and convenience foods like boxed cereal and snacks are full of empty calories and stripped of helpful protein and fiber, leaving you unfulfilled or even heightening your appetite. Replacing these with more veggies (see #1!) and whole grain foods is a much better solution and will help prevent overeating.
- They stress good portion control.
Some diets help encourage good portion control by stressing eating practices that manage appetite, while others are more explicit in their portion control methods by encouraging you to measure food, count calories, or count carbs. There are a million different ways to keep your portions in check—which one you use is less important than your adherence to and consistency in using it!
