Facing a Weight Loss Plateau? This Might Be Why
Once you start seeing results, the tantalizing potential to reach your weight-loss goal is so invigorating! Your motivation grows by the day! But then it happens. You’re still doing great—better than ever—but the scale stalls. Your regular weigh ins become as full of dread as your pre-lifestyle change weigh-ins were. What is going on?
When your weight seems stuck despite still doing everything right, it’s called a weight-loss plateau. There are all sorts of reasons it could be happening, but some are more common than others. Sometimes, just a slight change to address one of the below reasons can get the numbers dropping again.
- You’re too used to the amount or type of exercise you’re doing.
You’re still running three miles three times a week, and eating the same amount of calories, which by your estimation means you have a hefty caloric deficit. Awesome. The first two months you did this, the weight just fell off. Now, not so much. Why? As you grow fitter and more accustomed to the exercise you’re doing, your body becomes more efficient at it. Try a different type of exercise for a comparable calorie burn, and you’ll see results.
- You’re getting too comfortable with portion sizes.
Bodies and brains are tricky things. For a month, you meticulously weighed and measured your food, which worked great. Pretty soon you could eyeball 4 oz of shredded chicken like a pro—the scale proved it! So now, when you’re in a hurry, you start estimating. The thing is, your appetite and your mind are great at playing the “just a little more” game. You might not have consciously noticed you’re eating more… but you are.
- Something related to your diet is causing water retention.
This could be any number of things. Eating too few calories (oddly enough) can cause this, as can eating too much sodium (or too little), overdoing it on fiber, adjusting your carb/fat/protein ratio, etc. Two fixes here. First, drink more water if you’re not hydrating properly. Sugar free sports drinks can also help. Second, switch something up in your diet. Instead of toast for breakfast, go for scrambled eggs (or vice versa).
And of course, don’t forget about Nuez de la India! Our all natural nuts are an excellent way to give your weight loss regimen a little boost when it needs it most!
